Painted at first light at Waychinicup, The Gloaming was made during that strange, fleeting period before the sun rises.
We so often paint sunrise or sunset for the spectacle of colour, but I’ve become increasingly interested in what happens just before. At Waychinicup there is a particular feeling in those early moments — the landscape is still subdued, but there is already an energy building through it. The colours are quieter and less obvious, and everything feels suspended for a moment before the light changes completely.
That was the feeling I was trying to capture here: not the sunrise itself, but the atmosphere immediately before it.
