God’s Country captures an early morning descent down the stairs towards Greens Pool, as the first light moves across the landscape.
The sun throws a long shadow over the path while the granite rocks catch the morning light, echoing beautiful reflections back across the bay. Thick, lustrous brushwork sits alongside palette-knife marks and impasto strokes, giving the rocks, water and surrounding landscape a physical presence and allowing the surface of the painting to carry some of the energy of the place itself.
The work holds that particular stillness of the South Coast at the beginning of the day — cool air, clear water, warm stone and a landscape slowly coming alive. It is a celebration of Greens Pool in all its glory, and of the quiet magic that makes this stretch of coastline feel deserving of the name God’s Country.
