This large-scale work is a cubist interpretation of a cathartic pose drawn from a live life-modelling session. Rather than describing the figure literally, the painting focuses on rhythm—how energy moves through the body from top to bottom, breaking and reforming as it travels across the surface.
The figure is fragmented into interlocking shapes and planes, allowing structure and gesture to coexist. A restrained palette of muted umbers, warm reds, and gentle yellows anchors the composition, with subtle tonal shifts emerging between these colours. The limited palette becomes a field for experimentation, revealing unexpected depth and variation through layering and repetition.
Painted in oil on oil-primed canvas, the work embraces process and discovery. Marks remain visible, decisions are left exposed, and the painting resists resolution—holding onto the rawness of its making. Unstretched and unframed, the piece retains a sense of openness and immediacy, emphasising its experimental nature and physical scale.
This is a work about release without drama, emotion without narrative—a body translated into rhythm, weight, and movement.
