This painting is part of my ongoing series Spirit of Play—a body of work built slowly over months through layering, observation, and intuition.

Each painting in the series begins without direction. I start by making marks freely, allowing colour and gesture to accumulate without trying to impose order. The goal in the early stages is simply to play—to respond to the material and let the surface build its own energy.

After each session the painting is left to rest. I live with it for days or weeks, observing the rhythms that begin to emerge within the chaos. Over time those rhythms start to suggest structure. Gradually, I return with two or three new colours at a time, adding layers and continuing the conversation with the surface.

Most of the work happens in this long middle period: months of building, stepping back, and slowly making sense of what the painting wants to become.

Eventually there comes a moment when the painting asks me to stop playing and begin resolving it. What has been intuitive begins to find order. Forms clarify, rhythms align, and composition settles into place. Interestingly, while the painting may take months to build, the final resolution often happens quickly—sometimes within an hour or two of standing in front of the canvas.

Each painting in the series resolves itself differently.

Eternal Sunshine and the Infinite Mind is one of the pieces that chose to finish in the spirit it began—with play.

A field of luminous yellow carries traces of earlier layers: crimsons, permanent rose, and turquoise peeking through the surface. The colour relationships create a sense of brightness and movement, giving the work an unmistakable feeling of joy.

It’s the kind of painting that lifts the energy of a room. Bold, playful, and alive, it could easily become the anchor for an entire living space—something to design a room around rather than simply place within it.

There’s a lightness to this work, a sense that months of play remain visible in the final surface.

It’s difficult not to feel happier in its presence.
